A TOTAL-DESIGN APPROACH KEEPS PEOPLE FROM LOVING A PLACE TO DEATH
The goal of this conceptual residence is to maintain a green landscape in new suburban development, which is suffering deforestation because increasingly, Taiwan's city dwellers are vacationing there. The trend is good for rural economies but can be ecologically harmful. This design incorporates a diverse range of vegetation on the house itself, with deep-rooted plants grown in cylinders on the roof, climbing plants on exterior walls with humidity controls, shrubs on balconies, and epiphytes in planters on the facade. Windbreaks to the north of the proposed site block monsoon winds. Cisterns collect rainwater. And prefabricated systems minimize site disturbance from construction. The architecture is beautiful, the jury said. And the way it integrates with the landscape architecture is much like the commissions landscape architects are seeing in professional practice.
