A TATTERED INLAND WATERSIDE SITE BRINGS PEOPLE BACK TO ITS EDGES
Oakland's waterfront trail is fragmented at Brooklyn Basin among industry, infrastructure, and a degraded bay shore. Stormwater runs directly into the bay, yet a wetland has volunteered along a 1.5-acre abandoned lot on the site. This design would set a series of gardens between the docks in gradients, from subtidal oyster reefs to wet meadows and raised beds. The built-up and relatively inaccessible upland coastal scrub areas would be a counterpoint to a recreational clover lawn and a tidal marsh at the bay's edge. The intent is to create an immersive, educational experience while re-establishing the Bay Trail's continuity, not least for nighttime use. This concept would really encourage people to interact with the water at a place they couldn't before, the jury said.
