This project addresses a Philadelphia goal of increasing the tree canopy's cover to 30 percent by 20T5. Looking specifically at Langley Avenue, which stretches to the Delaware River, the team devised a studio and charrette to focus on increasing the number of trees while retaining useful open space and managing stormwater. The concept has individual trees in planting trays, which can be placed throughout the city and later used in landscapes. Further, a constructed wetland treats point-source runoff and provides the growing medium for riparian species to be raised in the tree trays. This concept is particularly suitable for a city like Philadelphia where green spaces are honeycombed throughout the city plan, the jury said. It is an easily borrowed example of using nurseries to expand the aesthetics of public space.
