SIMOKERTO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL1
The state government seeks to obtain new ideas from young architects through this pilot project for a primary school building design. It is hoped that this rehabilitation project could bring about a positive impact towards the improvement of Surabaya's education. Simokerto Elementary School has been selected from 400 primary school buildings for redevelopment.

The large dynamic roof form—and inverted pyramid building structure—not only serves to offer shading from solar heat and glare, it also reflects the children's character in their learning years. The stilts resting on a water body is reminiscent of the vernacular kampong house, providing a cool microclimate at the ground level.

Although the building design is modern looking, the materials selected are basic, eco-friendly and easily found locally, such as bamboo (sunscreen); bricks made from sugarcane waste (as a substitute for normal bricks); and bricks made from Lapindo mud (as part of the wall that faces direct sunlight). The designers hope that this model could be replicated for other primary school buildings to make them more environmentally-friendly.
