SCHOOL OF ART AND ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN, UNIVERSITY OF INDONESIA

The Magic Box
SCHOOL OF ART AND ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN1
The building design principle is simple—on the outside it respects the surrounding natural context, while on the inside it retains a colourful and playful character, in line with the nature of the school. The mass configuration was designed to create a positive space that can stimulate the students to explore their creativities and produce their best works; the outside of the building is designed to respect the surrounding landscape.

The interior design explores elements that seek to stimulate all the senses. The visual sense is stimulated by the light and shadow composition; the sound of windmills turning stimulates one's auditory sense; the scent of the flora appeals to the sense of smell; and the sense of touch will be experienced by the variation of the surface textures. These different spatial and experiential elements seek to help hone the students' sensitivity and artistic talents.
The architecture concept of this building is based on respecting the axis and surrounding context; reducing built-up area on green spaces and promoting a sense of public space.

This 'magic box" school also took into account two main factors. Firstly, its correlation with the surrounding buildings, especially the rector's building and the university's mosque—its placement emphasises the university's attitude to become a world-class research centre and represents the unification of science with religious principles. Secondly, the architecture preserves the existing trees and transforms the area into an active public space. The spacious landscape will serve as an outdoor gallery to display the students' work, as well as an outdoor classroom, performance stage and art installation area.
The building is also designed to respond to the sunlight, wind and water conditions. The fagade has gaps to allow for natural ventilation, which lessens the use of air-conditioning. The building mass extends from the east to the west to minimise exposure to the afternoon sun.
