The design of this project must cover considerations of it being a Muslim religious building, the culture of Madura, and unity with the Suramadu Bridge area. The expectation of this mosque's existence is to create synergy with other functions (besides being a rest area), such as food courts, cafe, plaza, souvenir shop, parking area, and open space. Its location at the entrance of Madura from Surabaya means it can become a landmark for the Suramadu area while reinforcing the architecture and aesthetics of its surroundings.
The look and form of Suramadu Mosque is adapted from the Madura "Lancing" Boat's design. It is the genius loci of Indonesia, a simple but strong boat, a way of transportation to wander around the world. Suramadu Mosque becomes a symbol of entering the strong sailors' island, with a simple boat. The mosque also takes the philosophy of Nun's Ark. It is an Islamic symbol that represents acceptance and welfare for everyone who enters. Its design does not refer to Persian, Arabic, or Javanese architecture; it wants to avoid being trapped in eclectic vernacular architecture or Madura traditional architecture. Rather, it explores other ways to become an icon and a symbol of Madura culture.
The whole structure is made out of steel, and uses a membrane system for its roof structure. The wall is created from ornamental calligraphy roosters on the second floor and glass partition on the first floor. The mosque lies along a west-east axis, so that there are openings on the north and south sides to let daylight in. With its streamlined form, it's designed allow the wind to follow the contours.
