FIXTURE: REMEDIATION OF THE GOWANUS CANAL

THE GOWANUS CANAL

The Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn has a long history of severe pollution, which has resulted in this highly valuable postindustrial location being severely underused. To create a new urban waterfront for surrounding communities, the first objective is to identify ways to re-establish an appreciation among residents of the area's aesthetic potential. Active and passive remediation is necessary to restart the natural cycles of rejuvenation, beginning with the land and moving to the water. The next step is to identify vacant lots and buildings as valuable resources to attract development. Referencing the clear graphic presentation, the jury saw this analysis as exemplary of the cumulative process of design development.
