FLYING BAMBOO

To comply with the principles of economic, social and ecological sustainability, Flying Bamboo, with an 856-square meter bamboo roof area, is an environmentally conscious design using low-cost local materials. It is located in Vinh Phuc Province, northern Vietnam, with a climate that is hot and humid. The landscape is vast, surrounded by nature, pond and greenery.
The philosophy behind using bamboo lies in its qualities that the architects deemed to be harmonious with nature. It is seen as flexible and “elastic” in its response to external conditions such as strong winds. Bamboo is also seen as a ‘cultural’ material that has its roots in Asian vernacular architecture. The aim was to find different possibilities of crafting the space with bamboo.

STRUCTURE
At the very first stage of the architecture firm's trial to use bamboo, for its wNw Cafe in 2005, the structure still needs to be supported by steel. A pure bamboo structure, in which a circular dome structure was constructed by connecting all the bamboo units, was developed later on for the Bamboo Dome project in 2007. However, these structures still have symmetrical and stable forms.
By comparison, Flying Bamboo was created as an expression of free-form structure. Shaped like a bird's wings and covering a large span of nearly 12 meters, it has no columns and is 'free' at both ends, which maximizes space while at the same time making it flexible to use. The curved shape of the bamboo structure not only has an aesthetic value but it is also strong in terms of load bearing.

ECOLOGY/ENERGY
The shape of the roof 'takes' the wind inside the building while an infinitive pool embracing the structure allows for a cooling effect by bringing down the temperature of the surrounding area. Both features act like the main natural air ventilation for the whole building. This reduces energy consumption, also seen as a key solution to the problem of reducing emissions. Its deep eaves give the inhabitants the feeling of living in nature even though they are inside the building. Efficient usage of natural resources, bamboo, and the architectural language make this an ecological design.

MATERIAL
There are many advantages for choosing bamboo as a material for this project. It grows fast and can be found all over Vietnam. Bamboo is not only a local resource but also a sustainable material. It is flexible and durable, and makes for a good material for wind-resistant designs.
